Instructions and Cleaning.
How to Clean, Use, and Maintain Your Sprout. Germination System
Taking care of your Sprout. system is key to ensuring it works effectively and your seeds thrive. Whether you're a beginner or seasoned gardener, keeping your Sprout. clean and well-maintained is simple. In this guide, we’ll cover everything from cleaning to setting the right temperature and germinating your seeds.
Keeping Sprout. Clean
Unlike other devices, Sprout. doesn’t have a powder coating, so it’s safe to use isopropyl alcohol for cleaning. However, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you don’t damage the device:
-
Never use hydrogen peroxide—even in small amounts. It can damage Sprout's anodized surface. This is purely cosmetic.
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to acidic substances, as they can also cause cosmetic damage.
-
Important Reminder: Always make sure your USB-C plug protector is securely in place before cleaning. Never clean while the device is plugged in, and never submerge Sprout. in water.
To clean Sprout. use isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, lint-free cloth, or soft-bristle toothbrush to gently wipe down the lid and germination pod. Afterward, rinse with distilled water and thoroughly dry the device.
Getting Started with Sprout.
Now that your Sprout. is clean and ready to go, it’s time to set it up. Simply plug in the device.
Once it’s powered up, you’ll see an LED light:
-
Red Light: Indicates a higher temperature (80-82°F / 27-28°C) has been selected.
-
Green Light: Indicates a lower temperature (77-79°F / 25-26°C) is set.
Adjusting the Temperature
To change the temperature, follow these steps:
-
Find the small access hole next to the LED light at the bottom of the unit.
-
Insert the temperature key into the hole, gently press down on the internal switch, and then release. This will change the temperature setting.
Germinating Seeds with Sprout.
Before starting the germination process, it’s important to clean the device again to avoid any pathogens that could harm your seeds. Use isopropyl alcohol with a q-tip or soft-bristle toothbrush, rinse with distilled water, and dry thoroughly.
Here’s how to get started with germination:
-
Twist the lid to release the magnets and remove it.
-
Place a cotton pad inside the germination pod.
-
Place your seeds on top of the cotton pad. (Sprout. has quadrant labels 1-4 to help you stay organized!)
-
Pour in half of your distilled, spring, or tap water.
-
Add another cotton pad on top.
-
Add the remaining water, up to a total of 10ml.
-
Gently press the cotton pads’ outer edges to seal your seeds inside.
-
Replace the lid, and the magnets will lock into place.
Important: Keep an eye on the cotton pads, ensuring they don’t dry out. Rehydrate them as needed to maintain the right conditions for germination.
For Larger Seeds: Use the Spacer
Larger seeds can be tricky to fit into the germination pod, but Sprout. has a solution. If you’re working with larger seeds, the Spacer (sold separately in the module pack) will help you create enough space for them.
-
Remove the lid.
-
Place the Spacer on top of Sprout., allowing the magnets to lock into place.
-
Follow the regular germination instructions, and if needed, layer cotton pads to accommodate more seeds.
For More Space or Lower Temperature: Use the Second Tier Tray
If you need extra space for your seeds or a cooler environment, you can use the second tier tray. This accessory creates a temperature zone about 1-2°F (0.5-1°C) lower than the main tray.
Here’s how to use the second tier tray:
-
Remove the lid from Sprout.
-
Place the second tier tray on top, ensuring the magnets lock into place.
-
Be sure the air channels face the same direction as the main unit (away from the USB-C ports).
-
Follow the regular germination instructions.
Note: The second tier tray is sold separately in the module pack.
Safety Tips for Using Sprout
For your safety and the longevity of your device, follow these tips:
-
Never submerge Sprout in water.
-
Avoid overfilling the pod—follow the water measurements carefully.
-
Do not use hydrogen peroxide for cleaning or germination.
-
Keep the USB-C ports, LED light, and temperature switch access dry. If any of these components get wet, unplug the device immediately.
-
Use the included safety plugs for any unused USB-C ports.
Environmental Considerations
Sprout. works best in a stable environment, so consider the following:
-
Avoid placing Sprout. in direct sunlight or near heat-producing appliances. It absorbs heat due to its high thermal conductivity.
Power Recommendations
For the best results, always use the USB-C cord included with Sprout. and avoid excessively long cables. We recommend using a reliable, name-brand power adapter, such as the Apple 20W USB-C adapter, to ensure your Sprout. gets the correct voltage for optimal performance.
With these tips, your Sprout. system will stay clean, efficient, and ready to help you grow healthy seeds into flourishing plants. Keep your device well-maintained, and watch as it helps you grow your garden from the ground up!
